6 Steps to Starting Your Solopreneur Journey
There's never been a better time to start your own business
The secret to growing on LinkedIn in 2024
There's a rising demand for high-quality video content on LinkedIn, creating a major growth opportunity.
How can you capitalize? Just grab your existing videos, and use OpusClip to turn them into clips and schedule them to post on LI.
It’s 2024, and there’s never been a better time to start your own business or become a solopreneur.
Unfortunately, you’re going to need to use social media if you really want to build something of your own.
It’s hard out here without an online presence.
But where do you even begin?
The good news is that I’ve spent my last 10 years figuring that out.
Now, there’s a ton of information on the internet that’s complex and difficult to understand. I’ve broken it down into 6 simple, actionable steps for you.
Step #1: Skillset & Unique Value Proposition (UVP)
Let’s be clear, you’re not just selling a product or service - you’re selling a unique solution to a very specific, already existing problem.
So, it’s important to identify your core skillset and turn it into a UVP.
For example, if you’re a copywriter who’s spent the last few years writing emails, tweets, etc. your UVP could be “turn your email subscribers into life-long customers!”.
Use Twitter (X), LinkedIn, or Instagram (easiest) to ask questions to your network about what challenges they face in your niche.
The real-time feedback will help you refine your UVP.
Step #2: Market Research
Googling your question isn’t going to help you here.
Dig deeper.
Turn to niche forums, subreddits, LinkedIn groups, Meta groups, and Twitter (X) where your target audience hangs out and observe the language they use and the problems they talk about.
Make a list of recurring pain-points and desires. What keeps them up at night? What challenges are they hoping to solve? What does your prospective customer’s dream future look like when you solve their problem?
Here’s one of my favorite writing techniques:
Pain —> Agitate —> Solution
Talk about the pain you’ve heard your prospects talk about, agitate that pain by talking about what happens if their problem isn’t addressed, and let them know you have a solution.
Here’s an example:
Problem
Are your search engine rankings extremely low? Is your website failing to attract customers?
Agitate
All your customers are going to your competitor websites, right? Every morning you open your inbox and meet with disappointment: no new sales notifications. Income is down. Expenses are the same or going up. You desperately need some traffic that converts.

Step #3: Business Plan
You don’t need to be like me and create a Harry Potter novel of a business plan.
Instead, create a one-pager that focuses on what milestones you need to hit, when you need to hit it, and what are your critical daily actions.
Use project management tools like Trello or Notion (what I use) to create a visual roadmap of your goals.
Authentically share your journey across social media.
Being authentic attracts engagement and can likely land you your first client. This is a huge inflection point for your business and where you learn the most about solopreneurship.
Step #4: Create Your Sales Funnel
Your website/landing page, and social media profiles must act as a seamless funnel.
Create a lead magnet based on the problems and solutions you’ve heard your customers talk about. Add testimonials and a call-to-action (CTA) that align with your UVP.
Get people to your new page with your social media content.
Use Twitter (X) threads or share photos on Instagram to take your audience behind the scenes. Show them the making of your product or a “day-in-the-life” of your service.
Step #5: Pricing Strategy
Pricing is difficult - no matter what stage of solopreneurship you’re in.
Start with 3 tiers to cater to different segments of your audience.
Price anchor by using one high-ticket price for a premium to make less premium services look more affordable in comparison.
Offer limited-time discounts exclusively to your social following to create a sense of community and urgency.
When you’re starting out, you learn the most by simply getting the reps in with your customers or clients. Take on new work and start learning as you go.
Step #6: Networking & Outreach
Building relationships online is the modern version of attending a networking event - and everyone is invited.
As you grow, this is probably the most important part of getting your business to the next level.
Collaborate with friends and peers in the space and support each other’s content and leave testimonials. This matters A LOT.
If you’re going to do outreach, utilize DM’s for deepening relationships. A personal video message or voice message can be much more impactful than a text-based DM (although, it’s all about HOW you deliver and WHY).
Lead with VALUE and CURIOSITY.
Summary
Starting a solopreneur journey, especially one that relies on social media, is really hard.
And there’s no “cookie cutter approach” to getting it right.
And you won't learn every single thing you need from this article.
But, if you execute this roadmap and have a willingness to dive deep and learn, you’ll give yourself a great chance to succeed.
I hope to see you out there, thriving.
You're not alone on this journey; you're part of a growing tribe of modern-day solopreneurs.
Just start building, even if you’re not quite ready.

Best of luck!
